The Cuckoo Clock has its origin in the heart of the Black Forest (Germany), having been invented here in Schoenwald in 1737. The name brings chills and visions of evil. Where witches roam and cursed trees with eyes watch your every move as you slither your way through. But don’t let the name scare you it is actually a very lively place. Aside from the depths of winter, the climate in the Black Forest is relatively mild.

The Black Forest is becoming a popula tourist place and also famous for its cuckoo clocks. A big display of them can be seen in the Schwarzwaldmuseum in Triberg. This museum also has sections dedicated to other local industries including mining and to local traditions (costumes, music, and carnival). Entrances are usually very reasonable compared with other countries. Many people think of the south of the Black Forest when they talk about the Black Forest. The region is also called the "Hochschwarzwald" – as it reaches a height of 1500m above sea level. But there are no steep peaks, only rounded hilltops. The "Feldberg" is the biggest hilltop, a massif several kilometers long, covered with forests. It is the highest region of all German low mountain ranges. Another famous feature of the Black Forest region are the traditional hats with their enormous pompoms called 'Bollenhut'. They are particularly distinctive among Germany's traditional costumes.
